This app is designed to predict the risk of anastomotic leak after colon cancer surgery. Anastomotic leak is one of the most serious and life threatening complications of colorectal surgery, and we hope that this app will benefit colorectal cancer patients by aiding pre-operative patient counselling and surgeon decision making, thus providing individualized high quality patient care.
Who should use this calculator?
This calculator is applicable to any adult patient with colon cancer who is undergoing surgery with curative intention (and not requiring a stoma bag).
How was this calculator made?
This calculator is based on a modification of the nomogram recently published by Frasson et al.* The parameter of "intra-operative complications" was excluded from our calculator as we only wanted to include pre-operative variables which would be of benefit in patient consultation before surgery.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
This app only serves to give an estimate if anastomotic leak rate of colectomy based on published data from one study. There are many other factors that can impact on this rate, and many other complications of surgery that are not mentioned here. The authors are not responsible for inaccuracies in rates, or for individual patient outcomes. Please consult your treating doctor for more information on the actual risks and benefits of surgery.
